I have a Miniature Pinscher, Mimi, that was coughing and sounded very congested. This went on for about two-three weeks until we took her to the vet. She appeared well otherwise, ate well, asked for treats, played, etc. so we didn't think she was sick. Three x-rays were taken by the vet and her trachea looked normal at the time, so the vet suggested taking her to a Cardiologist to rule out a heart problem. An Echocardiogram was done and her heart appeared normal with a small valvular leak, which would be considered excellent considering she is 13. The We saw the Primary vet again, and when we did, she was pleased with the Cardiologist's report and thought it could be the trachea after all. She prescribed cough medicine in pill form. Last night was the first night I didn't hear my little one hack that much and I think she rested alot more comfortably. It might be too soon to say that the medicine is helping her, but if her behavior continues as last night, I would say it is improving. (My vet did tell me though that sometimes on an x-ray the trachea looks normal, but it can collapse and then go back to normal again). The Echocardiogram and Cardiologist visit was quite expensive, as were the x-rays in the vets office, but it is painless to the dog to get checked, and hearing what is really wrong can put your mind at ease somewhat. I hope this helps.

We just recently lost our male chihuahua March 21 from this difficult disease. Many vets don't have the knowledge to treat this diagnosis. My advice first is to never use a round collar on your pet. Second it can be treated successfully with medications like bro chorus store and cough supressant meds not cough syrup. A calm environment that also is kept at an even temperature. A very hot day or really cold day can worsen their symptoms. Too much stimulation make symptoms worse. Most of all know your pet can have quality of life but age will require constant care. We had our "Arlee" 12 years. We miss him sooooo very much.

My 14 year old Chihuahua suddenly developed a non stop cough, sneezing and labored breathing at times. Took her to two vets, they did not even suggest it could be tracheal collapse, both said to give her cough medicaine and a sedative, which did not help much at all. So I did my own research on the internt, and now that I am informed, will be taking her to the vets and tell HIM what she needs. The glucosamine and theophylline sound like the right course of action. It is heartbreaking to see your wonderful dog be in such distress, as any animal lover knows and you feel helpless.

I took my 8 year sold terrier to the vet.three months ago because of his coughing and gagging. He first though it was his teeth which had cativites, so he pull the two and gave him an anobiotic. One month later the cough came back so we return to the vet. He took an x-ray and discover his tracheal collaspe. He stated he could not do that much for him but to give him Robitussin DM Cough suppressant. It worked for a while until he start barking and then he began to gagg.

Raul, a shleter mutt of 11 pounds (grey, terrier type, pugnosed) estimated age when tracheal colapse was pronounced-12 years old. Prognosis of vet - six months to live.

We give him a glucosamine tablet every day. (get it at the pet store and its flavoured so they take it like a treat)

His condition got better and is still not as bad as it was, though he is aging. He is 15 now and still a little tyrant. The glucosamin is supposed to be for joint tissue health but its all cartalidge so we figured why not. The vet said go for it, there was nothing he could do at that advanced age. We give him pig ears to chew on to stimulate blood flow and tissue growth in the throat area. Seems to have worked very well.

I have a 12 year old Shi-tzu that has been diagnosed with collapsing wind pipe. An X-ray revealed this along with a gagging cough. The Vet prescribed Temaril-P alomg with Baytril to be given twice daily. I don't see much change---maybe even worse. Has anyone used something that works?

Our poodle is 10 and suddently developed the trachea collapse. He was given xrays and found this. the vet advised giving him wome type of cough syrup and a pill twice a day. We also started using a vaporizer today. What have you given to your dog? It really hurts to see your pet with this. Rose

Our Walker Hound has begun to cough and gag, with negative results. Otherwise, he seems fine. He still runs, though his age (10-12 years) has slowed him somewhat. He does bolt his food rather aggressively. Any suggestions?

three weeks ago my dog came down with a persistant cough. two days later on the way to vet hospital he had a siezure and died. Yesterday mornig i awoke to my other dog having the same cough. we took him to the vet hospital and they said it was wierd they have never heard anything like it they gave her a antibotic shot and cough suppressant. today this morning she was worse.she was gagging like she couldnt get air. I took her back to the vet and they took chest x-ray, thats when they notice the clasp trachea, its not in her throat but down in her chest, her throat is swollen, they gave her a steriod shot and more medicene to open up her airway. The vet said he never seen anything like it. today is the second day like my other dog im scared she is going to die tonight, she isnt coughing as bad as the other dog but she doesnt look to good. so if anyone else experience this get them to the vet as soon as possible. the vet says it something like when a dog has smoke inhalulation. we had the dogs for 4 years lived at the same place i dont know what could of caused it, and why three weeks later another dog.
